TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

In recent years, the development of the technology is taking the important rule of our daily life. From Video 1 (The history of technology in education _ Youtube) the first point I can conclude that we should know the history and the development of the technology. The second point is the development of the technology itself does not far from the educational world. It can help human to get easy way in learning something.

The video 2, (A Vision of Students Today_Youtube) has explained us about the students' anxiety about the traditional classroom information presented. The problem faced by the traditional student is they are insensibly changing their focus to their gadget if the lesson makes them bored. Also the students do not really learn what they want. It can be proven in the video that said “I complete 49% of the reading assigned to me only 26% relevant to my life”. We can see many negative impacts of gadget or technology in this side.

The third video (A Vision of K-12 Students Today_Youtube) give an overview regarding how to inspire and motivate teachers to use technology in more interactive way to help students develop higher level thinking skills. If we are going to engage the students in the class discussions and the lectures, the teacher needs to be doing this engagement with the technologies they are familiar with. The forth video (Top 10 Reasons to Use Technology in Education) tell us the reasons why it is important to use technology in education like decreasing the budget in education needed.

According to those all of four videos, One of the most longstanding debates in the field of education has been whether or not we can take the benefit from technology. There is also a question in my mind “Do we, as human beings, have the ability to learn, think, analyze, evaluate and create in this way, and can we truly learn new skills and expand our knowledge by learning using technology?”

In all of the area, it is always having both of positive and negative impacts. Traditional classroom methods may not always provide students with a fun learning environment. But nowadays, technology helps educators engage students with many fun learning approaches. So we should integrate the education to engage them in the lesson. While introducing technology into students’ education, educators and parents should take proper care to avail many positive benefits of it.

Some positive sides of using technology in education: adding diversity to lessons, increasing student interaction, and to bringing new perspectives and knowledge to the class. That positive side is also the reasons why we should integrate the technology in education. But there can be a negative side resulting from inappropriate of technology, and that negative side can have serious and long-term consequences. The negative impacts according to article that I have been read are:

1. Technology Changes the Way Children Think, An article in Psychology Today says children who use too much technology may not have enough opportunities to use their imagination or to read and think deeply about the material.
2. Technology Changes the Way Children Feel, A report from the United Kingdom revealed that children might have difficulty developing social skills and emotional reactions.
3. Technology Can Put Privacy and Safety at Risk, children who use technology may unwittingly share information that can put them in danger.
4. More Use of Technology with Less Physical Activity Leads to Obesity, with technology that includes cars, television, computers and mobile devices, the amount of time we spend sedentary increased and our time in physical activity dropped.

In other side, we can decrease the negative impact if the teachers and educators can manage the way to learn by using the technology. Based on the article I have read tell that Over 10,000 teachers in Indonesia are set to receive training in information and communications technology after an agreement between the Teachers’ Association of the Republic of Indonesia and various telecom companies. Also I recommend to the students teacher like us to read book with the title “E-LEARNING CONCEPT, TRENDS, APPLICATIONS - © Epignosis LLC”. It is an interesting book which gives the all information about E-learning. With the tremendous development of mobile networks in the past few years and the increase in telecommuting, taking all the awesome features of e-learning in our daily life is a reality with Smartphone and other portable devices. Technologies such as social media are also transforming education constantly. The last sentence to make us aware in the development of technology in education is “take a minute and ask yourself what technologies you are well versed in”.
